What Is an EndoFLIP?
An EndoFLIP is a medical device that enhances an upper endoscopy and allows the provider to gather data regarding motility and muscular function of the esophagus, which may otherwise go unnoticed during a regular endoscopy.
How Does an EndoFLIP Work?
During an upper endoscopy, the doctor will place a thin plastic tube (catheter) through the mouth and into the esophagus. A balloon with sensors covers the catheter. Fluid is then passed through the catheter to slowly inflate the cylinder-shaped balloon, and the specialized sensors measure the amount of pressure in the esophagus, dimensions/diameter of the esophagus, and movement inside the esophagus in real time. These measurements are recorded and analyzed by the doctor to detect areas that are abnormally narrow, tight, too loose, or are not contracting properly.

The EndoFLIP procedure can add 10 to 15 minutes to the total duration of the endoscopy. It is done at the time of EGD so patients are under anesthesia while the exam is performed.
What Conditions Can an EndoFLIP Diagnose?
This test is performed to diagnose conditions that affect swallowing and esophageal function such as achalasia, lower esophageal sphincter dysfunction, eosinophilic esophagitis, and GERD and can be used both before and after foregut procedures to identify patients who would benefit from surgery or further endoscopic interventions or to follow up on results after they are performed.
